I want to say more, but I can feel a pain in my throat. Like I’m about to cry.

“Now that is interesting,” Brock says. “See, everyone has something unique about them. Something extraordinary.”

He composes himself. “Take me . . .”

It’s his turn. He rubs sweat from his chest and slicks back his hair with it.

“I’ve never told this to anyone in my life . . .”

He takes a deep breath.

“But I want the killer to know that I am an interesting, unique person. Not some mundane stereotype.”

He takes another deep breath.

“The thing that makes me unique and different is . . .”

His eyes close.

“I’m gay.”

He opens his eyes.

“I’ve never told that to anyone before,” he says. “It’s been bottled up inside of me since the eighth grade, but now I’m telling you. Even though I’m very strong and masculine, I’m a homosexual man.”

He reaches over and pats me on my knee, to show me he feels for my sad story.

“Is that it?” Spyder asks.

“What do you mean?” Brock asks.

“You’re gay?” Spyder asks. “That’s the thing that makes you interesting?”

Brock gets angry, “Hey, I—”

“Do you know how many gay people there are?” Spyder says. “There’s more gays in this country than there are blacks. Do you think I’m an interesting person just because I’m black?”

“But listen—” Brock tries to say.

“And John,” Spyder turns to me, “it’s a sad story and all, but just because your parents are dead it doesn’t mean you’re not mundane. Everyone’s parents die eventually. My dad died last year. It’s very tragic that they died when you were young, but it could have happened to anybody. It doesn’t change who you are as a person. It still makes us perceive you as nothing but an office monkey.”

“I swear you’re the murderer,” Brock says, aiming a fist at him.

“I’m not the killer,” Spyder says. “I’m just trying to point out that being gay in itself does not make you unique and interesting.”

“You homophobe!” Brock says to him.

“Race traitor!” Cedrik says to him.

Spyder hits his head into his fists and screams.

I’m not sure what’s wrong with him.
